The Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation-owned Cache Creek Casino Resort in North Carolina has confirmed that it was targeted in a cyberattack previously described as a “systems infrastructure failure.” The incident forced the Tribal casino to close its doors on September 20th.

Federal authorities and independent experts are working with the Tribe to determine the responsible party for the cyberattack and exactly what information may have been stolen. Significant cyberattacks can require weeks to research thoroughly; the investigation is ongoing.

The attack compromised the electronic information of patrons and employees, not strictly business activities. “The privacy of our guests and employees is our highest priority and we want to make certain they have some peace-of-mind,” reads a statement from the casino. “We are working closely with independent experts who regularly investigate incidents of this type to determine any risks to data security.”

Cache Creek Casino Resort will remain closed while technicians “fortify our infrastructure and restore all operations.” To further reassure the community, Cache Creek has committed to continued full pay and benefits for all employees during this time, “whether they have been asked to report for their regular shifts or not.” The casino was also shut down for two months in 2020 to prevent the spread of the coronavirus; employees were fully compensated then as well.

The casino’s statement continues: “Unfortunately, and as reported in the news, these computer attacks are becoming increasingly frequent, with major banks, a large healthcare company and a well-known Las Vegas casino becoming recent targets. We will be stronger from this, and we will remain vigilant in protecting our operation from these network predators. We are undaunted in our commitment to the security of our organization and the future of our business.”

Other Tribal enterprises remain open, including Yocha Dehe Golf Club and Cache Creek Mini Mart.
