George R.R. Martin, the novelist who wrote the HBO series “Game of Thrones”, has extended the deadline for his Cinematic Arts and Technology Scholarships for students at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) to June 1st. Students who demonstrate a passion for storytelling may have a chance to win the single $15,000 scholarship or one of two $5,000 scholarships. In addition to completing the online scholarship application, students must submit a story sample (or script) and bio.  For more information, or to apply, visit www.iaia.edu/newcomer.

Martin, a Santa Fe, New Mexico, resident, created the Stagecoach Foundation last year. His nonprofit is dedicated to bringing more film and television production to Santa Fe and to supporting educational programs — particularly ones that serve disadvantaged communities like the Native American and Hispanic communities. IAIA, a longtime Santa Fe institution, is a partner of Stagecoach.

The scholarships will support students in the college’s Cinematic Arts & Technology Department. Students must be a member of a federally recognized Tribe or a Canadian First Nations member.

IAIA President Dr. Robert Martin (Cherokee) said at a press conference announcing the scholarships: “I am extremely grateful for George’s support of IAIA’s film program and our students by establishing these scholarships — reflecting his value for education that acknowledges the huge difference that scholarships can make in promoting student success.”

Selections will be made by the George R.R. Martin Literary Foundation Scholarship Selection Committee. The recipients of all three scholarships will be announced at the IAIA Annual Scholarship Dinner and Auction on August 14, 2019, at the La Fonda hotel.

“Just being able to take the financial burden off some of our students so they can really explore their creativity without all that extra weight on their shoulders is really going to help our students,” said department chair James Lujan, reported the Albuquerque Journal.
