The “Native Business Top 50 Entrepreneurs” list serves to elevate awareness of the innovation, professionalism, competence and tenacity demonstrated by Native entrepreneurs across Indian Country. Native Business is rolling out profiles of these 50 Native entrepreneurs online, in no particular hierarchy, to document and memorialize their innovation and self-determination. The inaugural class of the Native Business Top 50 Entrepreneurs recognizes leaders across 13 business sectors, demonstrating the diversity of industries where Natives are making an impact. Among the entrepreneurs recognized in our Food sector is Ben Jacobs.
A decade ago, Ben Jacobs opened the doors to Tocabe, American Indian Eatery in Denver, Colorado.
Tocabe, which means “blue” in Osage, stands by its philosophy: “Native first and local second.” The fast-casual restaurant purchases ingredients from Native vendors whenever possible to put money back into Native economies. Tocabe also embraces an ingredient-driven concept, meaning they’ll create a unique dish around one exciting, indigenous ingredient.
Tocabe also takes a community-led approach to business. Every Tocabe member tastes each new food item. “We always say that we are a kitchen by committee,” Jacobs told Native Business.
Today the successful operation counts two brick-and-mortar locations, plus a food truck, and the Osage co-founder and his business partner Matt Chandra are in growth mode, looking to expand beyond Colorado’s borders.
“The plan from the beginning was to become a regional if not national brand,” Jacobs said. “I think within the next five years, we should be in multiple states; my goal is for six to eight additional restaurants.”
